LSU BASEBALL BLOG

12:25 a.m. -- LSU wins 7-6 in 15 innings

I told you Tuesday morning I wouldn't blog the rest of the day unless something extraordinary happened. Well, it took until the calendar switched to Wednesday for LSU and UNO to settle the Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Baseball Classic, so here I am in the early part of Wednesday, giving you an extraordinary final score from an extraordinary game.

LSU defeated UNO 7-6 in the bottom of the 15th inning to end the nation's longest winning streak at 13 games. The Tigers now have the nation's longest streak, also at 13 games.

I got home from a day of personal errands, on a rare day off in May, in time to see the 13th inning begin on Cox Sports Television. You can bet neither team was thrilled with having to play so many innings before a big conference series, and for awhile it seemed it would never end.

A few minutes ago, it finally did. Michael Hollander led off the bottom of the 15th inning with a double. Jared Mitchell bunted him to third base. UNO intentionally walked Blake Dean to set up the possibility of an inning-ending double play.

At 12:23 a.m. (on my computer's clock), Sean Ochinko rolled an 0-1 pitch through a drawn-in infield for a single into left field to drive in Hollander with the winning run.

The Tigers will now leave Zephyr Field in Metairie and go directly to Opelika, Ala., where they are staying for their three-game SEC series vs. Auburn beginning Thursday at nearby Auburn, Ala.

Wanted to let you know before going to sleep.

The winning continues. That's seven consecutive wins in gold jerseys, 13 consecutive wins overall.

What a way to extend the streaks.

Goodnight, and see you back here soon.
