Sunday editions of The Advocate will feature a front-page story about Alex Box, the person whose name is on the baseball stadium at LSU -- and about the nephew who shares the name with both. You'll also read about the late Alex's 90-year-old brother and their childhood together, and you might learn a few things you didn't know about Alex Box.
There is also a story about the different ways people pronounce Alex Box's name -- and some of the reasons for them.
I'm hopeful the main story will help a new generation or two develop a deeper understanding of who Alex Box was and why the old and soon-to-be-completed baseball stadiums bear his name. The blog tomorrow will feature a family tree, so you can see where the Box family has branched out (including Baton Rouge).
There will also be a considerable amount of notes -- as many or as few as you can manage to read -- with leftovers from interviews that began in 2006 and ended as recently as Friday. The notes will make you laugh, and they might make you cry.
Not all of you will make it through all of the notes, but there are plenty for those of you who might find yourself wanting to dig a little deeper into the story of Alex Box after reading the article in The Advocate.
About the blogSunday's Mississippi State-LSU game might be the last baseball game at The Box. I'm scheduled to write a column for Monday's paper, and I plan to see and hear as much as I can before, during and after the game.
To make sure my primary duty -- newspaper coverage -- is done to the best of my ability, I will have minimal blog posts Sunday until after the game. I know this might frustrate some of you who have come to depend upon the blog for game details between the first pitch and the last, but for this game I need to keep my focus on my role as columnist for Monday's paper.
I hope you understand.
Another reason I plan to keep a low profile from a blogging standpoint for much of the day is -- out of respect to the Box family -- I'd like for the extra coverage of Alex Box to be easy to find and have a prominent place on the blog. An editor's note in the newspaper will direct people here if they wish to know more about Alex and his family, and as a courtesy to them and to the Box family, many of whom are too far away to get a paper tomorrow, I want to make their searching as simple as possible.
That's not to say I don't value the readers of the blog. It's just that tomorrow is a big day for a lot of reasons, and I want to make sure I am free to do what I have to do to provide the best coverage possible on what could be the last day at The Box.
Thanks for your understanding, and I hope you find the coverage of Alex Box enlightening.
I promise a good recap after the game Sunday.
Until then, the blog has reserved a special place of uninterrupted focus for a truly special man -- Alex Box -- and his family.
Goodnight.
