LSU kept putting the pressure on Mississippi State in the bottom of the fourth.
With one out, D.J. LeMahieu singled up the middle. Leon Landry hit an opposite-field home run off the secondary fence at the left-field bleachers, giving LSU a 6-1 lead.
Ryan Schimpf and Michael Hollander followed with back-to-back singles. Jared Mitchell stroked one to right field, driving in Schimpf for a 7-1 lead and putting runners on the corners with one out.
That prompted a pitching change. Michael Busby, another right-hander, replaced starter Ricky Bowen.
With Blake Dean at the plate, Mitchell stole second and continued to third base on a wild pitch on Busby's first delivery. Hollander scored to make it 8-1. Dean hit a ground ball to second base in a drawn-in infield, and Mitchell was out at home after a physical run-in with catcher Ryan Duffy, who took an elbow to the face and was briefly shaken up on the play.
Derek Helenihi walked, bringing Micah Gibbs to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. He hit an RBI single to right field for a 9-1 lead and runners on the corners for Matt Clark.
He drove one deep but foul of the right-field line, then walked to load the bases for LeMahieu. He hit a ground ball to second base, and State got out of the inning with a force at second.
