LSU BASEBALL BLOG

4 p.m. -- It's 4-1 LSU

LSU asserted itself in the third inning, fueled by timely hitting and a staple of the old gorilla ball days, the three-run homer.

Leon Landry's leadoff single gave LSU its first hit and its second baserunner. Jared Mitchell had a first-inning walk but did not advance.

After Landry's single, Ryan Schimpf fouled off a pitch on a hit-and-run, then squared to bunt and offered without making contact, digging himself an 0-2 count. He singled to right field, advancing Landry to third, but was thrown out trying to make it to second base after a
momentary bobble by right fielder Nick Hardy.

Paul Mainieri immediately spoke with Schimpf when Schimpf returned to the dugout.

Michael Hollander hit the next pitch into left field to score Landry for a 1-1 score.

Mitchell bent an opposite-field single into left-center field to put runners on the corners with one out and prompt a meeting at the mound. Blake Dean then launched a three-run homer over the Intimidator in right field for a 4-1 lead.

Derek Helenihi struck out for the second out. Micah Gibbs made the third out on a fly to center field.

LSU honored members of the 1961 SEC championship team at the top of the third inning.

At the top of the fourth inning, LSU announced the catchers for its All-Alex Box Stadium "Omaha Era" Team: Brad Cresse, Tim Lanier, Matt Liuzza, Mike Bianco and Gary Hymel.

4:02 update: Blake Martin retired State in order in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs have one hit. Martin has retired 10 consecutive batters.

Too bad not to see Keith Osik's name on that list. His last year was 1990 and he signed (after his Junior year) with the Pirates for a small amount. He was a big leaguer for years as a back-up catcher with Pirates and Brewers, because he had a cannon arm. As an LSU Baseball Tiger though, he was known as "The RBI Man", because he was such a good hitter with men on base. He really wasn't a full time catcher at LSU until late in his Junior (last) year. He played SS and 3rd for most of those three years, then for the last couple of series, and the regional, and at Omaha, in the 1990 team's drive to Omaha he played in front of Gary Himel. Of course in 1991 Himel became a terror in the SEC after Osik was gone. Osik also did some relief pitching occasionally, and one night did an ironman promotion at The Box, playing one inning at each position. Keith told me once that he played SS as a freshman all year in 1988 and "never" actually fielded a ball. He said every time a ball was hit to him, he missed it, it would bounce off his body, then he would pick up the ball and throw the runner out. Talk about an ARM!
