Mississippi State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Grant Hogue led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Nick Hardy's sacrifice bunt.
He scored by stealing third base, catching LSU pitcher Blake Martin off guard, and when Martin's throw toward third sailed into foul territory, Hogue headed home with the game's first run.
Tyler Moore reached first base on an error by third baseman Michael Hollander. Jason Nappi struck out.
Russ Sneed had a full count before drawing a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. Ryan Duffy struck out, and catcher Micah Gibbs threw down to first baseman Matt Clark to complete the out after the unhit pitch hit in the dirt.
State leads 1-0 with LSU coming to bat for the first time today.
