Pregame ceremonies honoring four LSU senior players and an equipment manager drew healthy ovations at The Box.
Third baseman Michael Hollander and pitcher Jared Bradford, two mainstays in the lineup, were joined by reserve pitcher Kyle Beerbohm and reserve utility player Jason Lewis.
Mainieri said Lewis hasn't been an active part of the team this season -- no practices, no games because of an injury -- but is part of Senior Day because he's still in school and considered part of the program.
Earlier this week Mainieri said he would be on the field for Senior Day -- something he didn't do last season, his first as LSU's coach, and was criticized for -- and sure enough he was out on the field to shake hands with the players and be with them and their families.
Hollander's host family from his Cape Cod League days also attended and was with him and his family on the field.
As is the custom, stadium announcer Bill Franques read a list of accomplishments for each of the seniors. Mainieri presented each player with a framed photo of the player in action.
LSU also honored manager Jonathon "Pony" Moore.
First pitch is scheduled for 3:07.
3 p.m. update: Guest singers for the national anthem? The fans.
LSU put an unaccompanied microphone between home plate and the grandstand and pointed it toward the crowd, and Franques asked the fans throughout the stadium to sing the national anthem. They sang it loudly and sang it well, with more gusto than I've heard in years.
That was special.
Play ball.
