LEXINGTON, Ky. -- LSU struck first, and it didn't take long.
Michael Hollander led off with a leg double to left field. After a Jared Mitchell ground out to the pitcher, Blake Dean dropped a double between the left and center fielders, who both tried in vain to catch it after lots of running.
Hollander scored just ahead of the throw to home plate for a 1-0 lead.
Micah Gibbs grounded out to first base, with Dean moving up to third base with two outs. Derek Helenihi grounded out to shortstop for the third out.
LSU 1, Kentucky 0 after half an inning.
12:26 update: Collin Cowgill's hamstring, as you probably saw yesterday and today if you have TV coverage of the series, is still bothering him. His difficulty in running is pretty obvious, but Kentucky needs his bat in the lineup.
12:29 update: Chris McClendon's single just scored Sawyer Carroll, who had doubled with two outs. Paul Mainieri furiously argued the safe call at home, but he's got no case. Carroll beat the tag. I can see how Mainieri might have seen it differently from his angle, but from above and behind home plate, I can tell you Carroll scored.
Argument over. It's 1-1 now.
12:32 update: Jared Mitchell misplayed Ryan Wilkes' fly to left field, a catchable ball, and McClendon scored for a 2-1 Kentucky lead. Then Jordan Brown hit Brian Spear with a pitch, bringing LSU pitching coach Terry Rooney to the mound.
Mitchell, a former center fielder, is apparently still learning the angles in left field. It's not as easy as one might suspect to make the switch, even for an extraordinary athlete.
Inning over.
