Cannon Shots: Oct, 31, 1959
A year earlier, LSU scored a 14-0 shutout of Ole Miss before a Tiger Stadium-record 68,000 fans. The buildup is even greater for the Halloween rematch.
Ole Miss takes an early 3-0 lead when Cannon’s fumble sets up a short Bobby Khayat field goal. Cannon makes amends in the fourth quarter. Fielding a Jake Gibbs punt at his own 11-yard line, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound All-American breaks seven tackles en route to an 89-yard touchdown.
Back come the Rebels, charging toward a go-ahead score in the final 10 minutes. The homecoming crowd of 67,500 roars. Cannon and Warren Rabb combine for a stop on fourth-and-goal with 18 seconds remaining to ensure LSU’s 19th straight victory.
“It was all the papers said it was to be — and more,” Ole Miss coach Johnny Vaught said afterward. “People will talk about this game for a long time.”
