LSU-Tulane Matchups

PLAYERS TO WATCH

LSU CB Chris Hawkins

Season stats: 25 tackles (15 solo), 1 tackle for loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups

Hawkins is sharing the left cornerback spot with Jai Eugene right now, but this is a perfect opportunity for him to prove he belongs on the field more in passing situations down the stretch when the Tigers will encounter foes with multiple receiving threats. A proven playmaker with a pair of key interceptions this season, Hawkins needs to establish that he can neutralize receivers such as Tulane’s Jeremy Williams so opposing quarterbacks don’t start focusing solely on the left side of the field to avoid Patrick Peterson.

Tulane FLK Jeremy Williams

Season stats: 44 receptions for 662 yards, 3 TDs; 27-95 rushing; 22.1 yards per kickoff return this season.

Williams is the Green Wave’s only legitimate home-run threat and averages 130.3 all-purpose yards per game. For Tulane to keep this game within reach, Williams needs to provide an early bolt of lightning to get the aggressive and confident LSU defense on its heels. Williams can exploit defenses in a variety of ways and will have to come up huge for the Wave to stick around.

PREDICTION

This game looms as a mismatch across the board, but it’s important for LSU to come out with a purpose and make sure Tulane doesn’t gain any early confidence like it did two years ago in the lethargic first half of a 35-9 Tigers’ triumph. LSU’s offense took huge strides against Auburn last week and needs to make another big jump next week at Alabama, making this game an important bridge between those two games. Look for some different wrinkles in the first half and a commitment to pound away on the ground to develop some confidence in that area in the second as the Tigers cruise.

LSU 49, Tulane 3
