The son of one of the state’s best-known quarterbacks will apparently get to be the guy snapping the ball to LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson this season.
Les Miles said Monday that sophomore T-Bob Hebert, the son of former New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Bobby Hebert, will start Saturday at Washington. That’s slightly different from the depth chart that says either Hebert or P.J. Lonergan would start. And it was news for Hebert.
“I know as much as y’all do,” Hebert said when asked about being the starter. “If it works out like that, it’s great. If it doesn’t, that’s OK too, because I’m just going to go out there and do the best I can no matter what. Me and P.J. will both be on the field, helping out the team any way we can.”
Hebert backed up Brett Helms last season, but suffered a knee injury in the South Carolina game in October. The sophomore was limited in the spring while Lonergan, a redshirt freshman, moved to the top of the depth chart.
They’ve have a competitive August camp that saw Hebert see more time working with the first team as camp went on.
Miles said Hebert and Lonergan will both play Saturday.
“They both fit in real well, and they’re guys who are very serious about their trade,” Miles said. “They’re going to get it right, and they’re making all the right calls. We’ve not really missed a beat there. Our centers have really picked it up.”
Sight-seeing
LSU is scheduled to leave at 7 p.m. today for Seattle and will have a chance to see a lot of sights ... at least football sites.
Miles said the team will “stop at Husky Stadium” then head to the Seattle Seahawks facility for a walk-through Friday.
Chart movers
The two most prolific Tigers enter the 2009 season poised to climb the program’s charts.
Tailback Charles Scott needs eight points to move into 10th place alone on the all-time scoring list. His 28 rushing touchdowns are sixth in LSU history, 18 behind all-time leader Kevin Faulk (46 from 1995-98). Scott crashed into the end zone 18 times last season.
