Top 10 LSU Baseball Games of 2009

1. LSU 11, TEXAS 4

(JUNE 24/OMAHA, NEB.)

The Tigers finish off their first national championship since 2000 in the third game of the College World Series best-of-three championship series. Anthony Ranaudo supplies 5-plus gutsy innings on the mound, Jared Mitchell gets LSU started with a three-run home run in the first inning, freshman sensation Mikie Mahtook drives in the go-ahead run to trigger a five-run sixth inning and Sean Ochinko cranks out four hits as the Tigers climb back to the top of the college baseball world for the first time since 2000.

2. LSU 12, VILLANOVA 3

(FEB. 20/ALEX BOX STADIUM)

LSU opens the new Alex Box Stadium amid postseason-like hoopla as 9,054 fans cram through the gates for the stadium’s debut. Mitchell gets the Tigers started with a two-run single that keys a four-run first inning and Blake Dean jacks the first home run in the new edifice, a three-run shot in the sixth that gives LSU a 9-0 cushion. Senior Louis Coleman nabs the victory on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing only two hits and no runs.

3. LSU 7, TEXAS 6

(JUNE 22/OMAHA, NEB.)

LSU avoids falling into a hole in the CWS championship series with a stirring comeback to force extra innings. The Tigers survive five solo home runs by the Longhorns against Coleman when DJ LeMahieu delivers a huge two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning and Mahtook chases in LeMahieu with the game-winner in the 11th. Freshman Matty Ott tosses three shutout innings for the victory and the first half of the national championship victory.

4. LSU 3, BAYLOR 2

(MAY 30/ALEX BOX STADIUM)

The Tigers’ first extra-inning game of the season turns out well when freshman shortstop Austin Nola comes through with an RBI single in the 10th inning. That makes a winner out of Ranaudo, who tosses nine innings of dominant ball with 14 strikeouts, and sends LSU to the regional championship game. “That one took us to the wall,” Tigers coach Paul Mainieri said.

5. LSU 2, OLE MISS 1
