PINEHURST, N.C. — LSU sophomore Andrew Loupe kicked off match-play competition at the 109th North & South Amateur Championship on Wednesday with a 5 and 4 win over No. 1 seed and defending champion Matt Savage at Pinehurst No. 2.

Loupe, the No. 64 seed, took a quick 3-up lead over Savage with birdies on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6, before giving back a stroke on No. 7.

A pair of birdies on the 10th and 13th holes increased his lead to 4-up, and Loupe then sealed the win with a birdie at No. 14.

Savage is an All-American from Florida State.

Loupe, who earned the final match-play spot by winning a playoff in Tuesday’s qualifying round, will play another All-American today: No. 32 seed Lion Kim, a sophomore from the University of Michigan.

Loupe and Kim will start at 6:30 a.m. today. Live scoring of the tournament can be found at http://www.golfstat.com/.
