Zeigler transferring to junior college
LSU pitcher Randy Zeigler, who suffered a season-ending elbow injury as a freshman, is transferring to Bossier Parish Community College, according to the Shreveport Times.
Zeigler, a left-hander, made three appearances for the Tigers — all out of the bullpen — without a decision. He had a 6.00 earned run average.
On April 9, Zeigler was scheduled to start against Grambling State at Alex Box Stadium. It was to be the first of his collegiate career.
But while warming up in the bullpen, Zeigler felt a pop in his left elbow. He was diagnosed the next day with a torn ligament and ruled out for the year.
By transferring to BPCC, Zeigler would become eligible for the 2010 baseball draft. However, he said his decision wasn’t based on that.
“This gives me an opportunity to play,” Zeigler told the Times.
Part of a ballyhooed 2009 freshman class, Zeigler arrived at LSU after leading Calvary Baptist to the Class 2A state championship.
In his final two prep seasons, Zeigler won 22 games and hit 23 home runs.
Stang signs
LSU signee Chad Stang has signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to a Sunday report on MLB.com.
Stang, an outfielder, is from British Columbia. He was selected by the Brewers in the eighth round of the 2009 baseball draft.
Stang played at Midland Community College in Texas.
