LSU tries to keep streak going vs. state schools
Today is the last call this season for state schools in their efforts to end LSU’s 20-year-old home winning streak against state opponents.
LSU has won 73 straight home games against in-state competition leading into tonight’s game against Southeastern Louisiana. The streak dates to the 1988-89 season. So far this season, the Tigers are 6-0 against the state with seven of the 12 Division I state rivals on the schedule. On the list this year are Centenary, Northwestern State, Grambling State, Nicholls State, McNeese State and Louisiana-Lafayette. Not on LSU’s schedule this year are Louisiana Tech, the last state team to win at the PMAC back in 1988, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern, New Orleans and Tulane.
And more home streaks
LSU has a 14-game home win streak overall coming into tonight’s game, including 11 straight home wins to open the season.
The home win streak is the fifth longest in school history. SLU has won just once on the road and that win came in Baton Rouge against Southern.
Showtime against Tigers
LSU keeps running into relatives of members of the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s. In the win over Washington State, the Tigers were matched up with Klay Thompson, the son of ex-Laker Mychael Thompson. Tonight, LSU will play against Kevyn Green, a nephew of 1980s Laker player A.C. Green.
Martin’s status unclear
LSU coach Trent Johnson remained mum on the status of guard Terry Martin, who has been under suspension for the last three games.
The senior has spent those games in street clothes at the end of bench. He hasn’t played since the Dec. 20 loss to Texas A&M in which he only played four minutes.
“He’s practicing hard and as long as he keeps doing that he’ll be fine,” Johnson said.
Notes
LSU is 3-0 against the Southland Conference this year and will attempt to sweep the Louisiana members of the SLC tonight. The Tigers have wins already over Northwestern State, Nicholls State and McNeese State, all at home. However, LSU trailed for much of the Nicholls and McNeese games before rallying. … LSU coach Trent Johnson refused to answer questions regarding LSU’s next opponent, Utah, which is coming off a win over Gonzaga. “You don’t know me if you think I’ll talk about them,” he said. “All my focus is on Southeastern Louisiana.” … Tasmin Mitchell is 36 points from joining the top 30 in LSU career scoring. He is 35th with 1,063 points and he needs 1,099 to tie Bob Meador for a spot in the top 30.
