LSU volleyball sweeps Nicholls St.
LAKE CHARLES — Although Hurricane Gustav forced the No. 24 LSU volleyball team to cancel its home tournament this weekend, the Tigers made the most of being a late addition to the McNeese Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Nicholls State (25-12, 25-23, 25-18).
After waiting out the hurricane outside of Memphis for a week while unable to return home from the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb., last weekend, the Tigers finally arrived back in Baton Rouge by bus late Thursday afternoon only to leave again early Friday morning.
LSU improves to 3-1 with the victory, while Nicholls State drops to 0-4.
“It was good to get back on the court and have a chance to play,” LSU coach Fran Flory said after team improved to 3-1. “I don’t thing we executed at a very high level today, but considering the circumstances I’m proud of how hard we played. We have to continue to work on our side, but I think we made some good steps forward today.”
Kyna Washington led the Tigers with 10 kills, followed closely by Tania Schatow with eight. Brittney Johnson dished out 14 assists while libero Elena Martinez matched that number in digs.
Knotts named pitcher of the year
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Former Louisiana Tech pitcher Alan Knotts was named the team’s Pitcher of the Year by the State College Spikes, the short-season Single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Knotts appeared in 21 games (all out of the bullpen) for the Spikes and went 3-2 with a 4.09 earned run average and one save. He struck out 51 in 44 innings pitched while only walking nine.
Knotts was selected by the Pirates in the 38th round of the major league baseball draft.
