EUGENE, Ore. — LSU women’s golfer Megan McChrystal fired two solid rounds Monday and Tuesday and advanced to match play today in the 108th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Eugene Country Club.

McChrystal, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Tigers this fall after leading the team in stroke average as a freshman, fired rounds of 1-over 73 and 2-over 74 to easily make the field of 64 for match play from an original field of 155.

Former Duke star Amanda Blumenhurst is tied for medalist honors at 4-under 140 with Stephanie Na of Australia.

Former LSU player and now LPGA member Meredith Duncan of Shreveport won the Amateur in a one-hole playoff after the match was all square after 36 holes in 2001.

Men’s golf

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — LSU’s is making its presence felt at the men’s U.S. Amateur Championship as incoming freshman Josh Jones became the fourth Tiger to qualify for the tournament Monday at the sectional qualifier at Great Southwest Golf Club.

Jones joins senior Jarrod Barsamian, junior Bryant Lach and sophomore Clayton Rotz in the championship with a field of 312.

The championship will be held at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in Pinehurst, N.C., as the week-long tournament will run from Aug. 18-24.

Jones secured his spot in a sudden-death playoff after firing rounds of 3-under 68 and 1-under 70.

He signed with LSU as one of the premier junior golfers in the country as he is currently the 12th-ranked junior golfer in the latest Polo Junior Golf Rankings released by the American Junior Golf Association.

Last week, Jones helped lead the West squad to its fourth straight victory at the Canon Cup at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., while making his third straight appearance in the event.

Soccer

LSU soccer coach Brian Lee and his coaching staff welcomed 19 student-athletes to campus Tuesday as the soccer team is set to begin fall camp this week in preparation for its season opener against South Alabama on Aug. 22.
