LSU OL Jones booted off team
First Ryan Perrilloux. Now one of the players who would have blocked for him has been kicked off the LSU football team.
LSU announced Thursday that sophomore offensive tackle Jarvis Jones has been dismissed for violating team rules. No further elaboration was given.
A native of Rosenburg, Texas, the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Jones played in seven games as a true freshman last year during LSU’s BCS national championship season.
“The issues we had with Jarvis were internal and ones that we dealt with within the framework of our team,” LSU coach Les Miles said in a written statement. “However, we just felt like it was time to go in a different direction. We wish him well in any of his future endeavors.”
While LSU’s offensive line remains a team strength, Jones is the third reserve O-lineman to leave this year.
In May, shortly after Perrilloux was dismissed, two other Tigers announced they would transfer.
Junior Max Holmes, a graduate of Parkview Baptist, transferred to Stephen F. Austin. Matt Allen, a sophomore from Spring, Texas, also decided to leave the team.
The remaining Tigers put away the weights and offseason conditioning drills Wednesday night and took up sides for their own slow-pitch softball tournament at a ballpark near the LSU campus.
It’s the second straight year the Tigers have staged their own softball tournament, which LSU billed as a team-building exercise.
The Tigers split into eight 12-man teams. The squads with the two best records squared off in the championship game.
“The players have worked so hard this summer in the weight room, it’s nice to be able to get away for a few hours and enjoy a team function outside of football,” Miles said. “It’s fun to watch. You can tell which players have a baseball background and which ones have never really played the game before.”
Team 3, led by wide receiver/first baseman Chris Mitchell and quarterback/shortstop Andrew Hatch, beat Team 7 in the final 8-4. Team 7 was led third baseman/running back Charles Scott and shortstop/offensive guard Lyle Hitt.
Safety Chad Jones, who played baseball for LSU this year, launched a home run nearly 400 feet. Speedster Trindon Holliday also homered.
