LSU football camp begins today
To the victors go the spoils?
In the case of the LSU football program, try about 600 campers that are scheduled to make their way to campus beginning today for the start of the Tigers second summer camp. That will be held in conjunction with a 7-on-7 passing tournament, offensive and defensive linemen camp and a three-day senior camp.
“I think it comes with the territory when you win it all and you’ve had the kind of success we’ve had,” LSU recruiting coordinator Josh Henson said. “I think kids want to come and be a part of that.”
The camp is expected to attract kids from all over the country. Some will be highly regarded junior and senior high school prospects, while others will be freshmen and sophomores looking forward to their first college camp experience.
“You get to see guys when they’re young and they get to experience LSU and the intensity of playing at this level and the type of effort it takes,” Henson said. “They get to be around our coaching staff and get coached. All of those things are good for young kids to be involved in.”
More than half of LSU’s 14 commitments for 2009 are expected to take part in the camp.
That includes running back Michael Ford of Leesville, defensive back Janzen Jackson of Lake Charles-Barbe, offensive lineman Chris Faulk of Slidell-Northshore, defensive lineman Josh Downs of Bastrop along with quarterback Russell Shephard of Houston, running back Dexter Pratt of Navasota, Texas, defensive end Michael Brockers of Houston, linebacker Willie Ferrell of Tallahassee, Fla., and quarterback Chris Garrett of Tupelo, Miss.
The potential for that class to grow over the weekend exists with several of the state’s and nation’s top uncommitted prospects set to participate.
The state’s top-rated prospect, Rueben Randle of Bastrop, tops that list along with defensive lineman Chris Davenport of Mansfield, defensive lineman Darrington Sentimore of Destrehan, running back Eddie Lacy of Dutchtown, wide receiver Kenny Bell of Rayville, linebacker Lamin Barrow of John Ehret, linebacker Barkevious Mingo of West Monroe, linebacker Jonathan Stewart of Shreveport-Byrd.
Locally, defensive tackle Deon Simon of Glen Oaks and defensive back Josh Johns of Central, are also scheduled to attend.
The Tigers could have as many as 10 of the Rivals.com’s Top 100 players. Headlining that group is defensive tackle JaMarkus McFarland of Lufkin, Texas, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick of Gadsden, Ala., safety Craig Loston, Aldine, Texas (Clemson commitment), cornerback Gabe Lynn of Jenks, Okla., wide receiver Andre Debose of Sanford, Fla., linebacker Jarvis Jones of Columbus, Ga., safety Kevin Brent of Dallas, Texas, safety Darren Myles of Atlanta, athlete Ray Ray Armstrong of Sanford, Fla., and wide receiver Kendall Kelly of Gadsden, Ala.
“We’ve got to continue doing a great job of evaluating and making sure we’re getting the right players from here on out,” Henson said. “I think there’s going to be several people in camp that fit that build. We’ve just got to finish up strong. It could be a huge weekend.”
