Warriors sign top pick Randolph

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors signed first-round pick Anthony Randolph to a contract Tuesday.
Based on the league’s rookie scale, Randolph, a former LSU standout, will make about $1.4 million his first season and about $1.5 million in his second as the 14th overall pick. All rookie contracts for first-round picks are guaranteed the first two years, with options for the next two.
Randolph, who turned 19 on Tuesday, averaged 15.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.26 blocked shots per game in his one college season at LSU.
Randolph is currently playing in the summer league for the Warriors, where he scored 30 points in his debut last week.
Ortego leads junior tournament
PLAQUEMINE — Ben Ortego of Baton Rouge fired a 75 to take a one-stroke lead over Port Allen’s Hunter English after one round of the Island Junior Classic at The Island Country Club.
Other local golfers in the top 10 of the boys 15-19 division included Matt Decell, Kyle Pearce and Hunter Smith, who all shot 80, were part of five-way tie for seventh.
Sam Justice carded a 79 to lead the boys 12-14 division. Ted Lieux’s 83 put him in a second-place tie.
In the girls 15-19, Brooke Braun of Metairie and Susannah Barber of Baton Rouge were 1-2 with 78 and 91 totals.
LSU swimming assistant named
Jessica Botzum, who recently wrapped up a strong career at Virginia Tech, has joined the LSU swimming and diving coaching staff, head coach Adam Schmitt announced Tuesday.
Botzum is the second assistant Schmitt has hired this summer. Former Maryland assistant Kevin Clements came on board in June. She earned eight All-America honors and captured five Atlantic Coast Conference titles while at Viriginia Tech. She was the only swimmer in school history to be named the ACC swimmer of the year.
