LSU capped the most successful athletics season — from top to bottom — in school history by recording an eighth-place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup.
The annual U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup, which measures the overall strength of university athletic programs, released its final standings for the 2007-08 year Thursday at the conclusion of the College World Series. Points are awarded based on each school’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
The eighth-place finish is the highest for LSU since the inception of the director’s cup in 1993-94. The Tigers accumulated 1,085 points, scoring in 17 of a possible 20 sports, a first in school history. The Tigers sent 19 of their 20 teams to NCAA postseason play in 2007-08.
Leading the way in terms of Director’s Cup points for LSU in 2007-08 were its two national champions in football and women’s outdoor track and field. Each of those sports were awarded 100 points for the Tigers for their first-place national finish, while the LSU picked up 90 points in men’s outdoor track and field and women’s indoor track and field for second-place national finishes.
LSU’s other Director’s Cup points came from women’s basketball (83 points), men’s indoor track and field (80 points), gymnastics (75 points), baseball (73 points), women’s golf (60 points), volleyball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s soccer (50 points each), men’s swimming (44.5 points), women’s swimming (32 points) and men’s golf (10 points).
Stanford won its 14th straight director’s cup title with 1,461 points, while UCLA was second (1,182 points) and Michigan third (1154.5).
Arizona State (1,146 points) and Texas (1129.5 points) rounded out the top five.
LSU’s eighth-place finish was second among teams in the Southeastern Conference. Florida was first in the SEC and sixth overall (1,126.75).
In addition to its two national titles in football and women’s outdoor track and field, LSU had two national runner-up finishes (women’s indoor track and men’s outdoor track), sent its women’s basketball team to the Final Four for a fifth straight season, had its gymnastics team reach the Super Six for the first time in school history and the baseball team played in the College World Series.
LSU also claimed four SEC titles, winning the league championship in football, women’s basketball and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The Tiger baseball team captured the SEC tournament title.
The Tigers finished as the SEC runner-up in four other sports — baseball, volleyball, and men’s indoor and outdoor track.
LSU was crowned the SEC Western Division champ in four sports — football, volleyball, women’s soccer and baseball. The Tigers became the first team in the SEC West and only second in the league (other is Florida) to sweep division titles in football, soccer, and volleyball, in the same season.
