Goodbye, Box - Hello, Omaha
The LSU baseball team closed out 70-year-old Alex Box Stadium in triumphant fashion Monday night.
Now the Tigers are headed back to their home away from home for more than two decades: Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., site of the College World Series.
LSU emphatically stamped its ticket by crushing UC Irvine 21-7 in the third and final game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional before an Alex Box-record crowd of 8,173. The win sends the No. 7-seeded Tigers (48-17-1) into the CWS to play No. 2-seeded North Carolina (51-12) at 6 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2.
This is LSU’s 14th CWS appearance since 1986 and first since 2004.
UC Irvine (42-18) was three outs from eliminating LSU in Game 2. The Anteaters beat LSU 11-5 on Saturday and led 7-4 in the ninth inning Sunday. The Tigers rallied for five runs to win 9-7 and force Monday’s winner-take-all contest.
There was no such drama in Game 3. LSU took a 6-0 first-inning lead on consecutive home runs by Blake Dean, Micah Gibbs and Matt Clark and was never challenged.
The Tigers belted seven homers in all, two by Ryan Schimpf.
