It looked like Les Miles’ first “victory” at LSU back in 2005 — getting Ryan Perrilloux, arguably the nation’s best prep football player, to renege on his commitment to Texas and stay in state to play for the Tigers.
Pressed into service as a replacement starter for Matt Flynn in the 2007 SEC Championship Game, Perrilloux delivered an MVP performance that seemed to herald the highlight reels to come.
Turns out, it was the highlight. Friday, Miles announced he had dismissed Perrilloux from the team, no longer willing to tolerate the quarterback’s off-the-field entanglements and distractions in return for his glittering promise.
In a four-paragraph statement issued early Friday morning after he addressed the dismissal with the rest of the team, Miles announced Perrilloux was no longer associated with LSU football.
“Ryan was given every opportunity to be a part of this football team,” Miles said in the statement. “In the end, he didn’t fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete. We hope that a new beginning will benefit him.
“I wish Ryan and his family nothing but the best in any future endeavors.”
A report on ESPN.com, which cited unnamed sources, said Perrilloux was dismissed because of a positive drug test. When asked Friday, Miles would neither confirm nor deny the report and declined further comment.
Reached at her LaPlace home Friday, Perrilloux’s mother, Bobbi Breaux, also declined comment.
Attorney Nathan Fisher declined comment on the ESPN report as well, but said he continues to represent Perrilloux in an ongoing federal counterfeiting investigation.
“The coach made his decision,” Fisher said. “It’s just unfortunate. I hope the young man can get his life together.”
Suspended three times over the past year, the most recent action involving Perrilloux was his reinstatement immediately following the LSU Spring Game on April 5.
Perrilloux accompanied the team to Washington D.C., the following week, where the Tigers were honored at the White House for winning the 2007 BCS national championship.
This time, Perrilloux’s departure from the team is definitely permanent, according to LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette. Perrilloux is expected to finish out the spring semester at LSU, then transfer to another school.
