LSU offense looking for new quarterback

Scan LSU’s roster on the school’s Web site and you won’t find Ryan Perrilloux’s name there anymore. It had already been expunged Friday, shortly after Les Miles announced he had dismissed the troubled quarterback from the team.

What went with Perrilloux was the lion’s (make that Tiger’s) share of LSU’s experience at quarterback. With one chop of Miles’ disciplinary ax — plus the departure of Matt Flynn to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers — LSU has gone green in a big way behind center.

That may sound environmentally responsible, but the reality is in the hothouse environment that is SEC football it isn’t easy being green.

LSU’s most “experienced” hand is junior Andrew Hatch, a walk-on who transferred from Harvard before last season.

His stat line from 2007: 1 completion, 2 attempts, 9 yards.

At least he wasn’t interception prone.

LSU has two redshirt freshmen — Jarrett Lee and walk-on T.C. McCartney, grandson of former Colorado coach Bill McCartney. There’s another walk-on, sophomore Paul Scioneaux, and true freshman Jordan Jefferson of Destrehan. Jefferson is probably the most highly touted quarterback to come from the River Parishes since …  well, never mind.

With Perrilloux suspended the entire spring, the focus in practice was primarily on Hatch and Lee.

Hatch was generally credited with having the better Spring Game performance, but he’s older than Lee and has been schooled in offensive coordinator Gary Crowton’s offense since he was attending his summer camps as a schoolboy back in Nevada.

Hatch is regarded as more of the runner. Lee has more of a pocket presence and a stronger, more accurate arm.

Who will get the first start on Aug. 30 in the Appalachian State game? How about Perrilloux if he transfers to Appy State? We’re kidding of course, but you never know.

The bet, from an LSU perspective, is to put money on the Nevada kid. Just don’t bet the house.

Miles has hardly ruled out a two-quarterback system and it’s easy to envision one for the Tigers this fall. A little song, a little dance. A little run, a lot of pass. At least for the first three games, all home contests against Appy State, Troy and North Texas leading up to a pivotal first road trip Sept. 20 at Auburn.

Les Miles may have hurt LSU by procrastonating on Ryan s release.I can't say I blame him for it though.....LSU didnt actively persue other heavy talent in the QB position due to Ryan being there.....I'v pulled out my lucky rabbits foot and horseshoes in the hopes that Les can find a miracle out there somewhere......If not .....let's hope for a great running game which ,evidenced by Arkansas, won't get it done in the SEC....

I believe overall Les has done the right thing by releasing Ryan Perilloux. This maybe the best thing that could have happened to Ryan. This shows him that he's not invincible. Maybe he will correct some of his mistakes. At the same time I think Les Miles has sealed his fate as the Tigers coach. First of all, the two defensive coordinators will not work. I haven't seen this system succeed yet. Secondly, LSU will suffer at the quaterback position against tough SEC competition: Florida, Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama. These are 4 more than likely losses this year not to mention the possible upset to Appalachain State. The Nick Saban error is finally over, now let's see what Les Miles can do. I think Ryan will become a great Division 1AA quaterback and a 4th round NFL pick.

"The Nick Saban error is finally over, now let's see what Les Miles can do." Dude - have you been in a coma for the past year? .... "Les Miles has sealed his fate as the Tigers coach." What? So you think Miles' job is in jeopardy after winning the NC? .... "LSU didnt (sic) actively persue (sic) other heavy talent in the QB position due to Ryan being there" Jarrett Lee was a top 10 QB in his recruiting class. Jordan Jefferson is the top high school QB in La. ..... Miles did the exact right thing with RP, he gave a 21 year old kid a chance to mature, and when that didn't happen, he let him go to maintain the integrity of his team. Our QB position will be fine. Both the 2003 and 2007 NC teams were led by QBs that managed the game; neither were considered "heavy talent."

Quite frankly I am pleased that Les Miles has taken this action. The chemistry of the team will be better and the reputation of the program at LSU remains in tact. No doubt, Les gave him every chance possible to get his act together and showed considerable patients and compassion. Some people have to learn the hard way and Ryan no doubt is one of those. I am not sure that there is a future for him in football if he doesn't wake up and see what is happening to him. The NFL doesn't want another Mike Vick type of guy around, no matter how good he might be.
