The LSU women’s golf team will have an eye on the title when play gets under way in the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic today.
The 54-hole event begins at 8 a.m. at the University Club. LSU will be in the early wave, beginning shortly after 9 a.m. from the No. 1 tee. A single 18-hole round will be played each day through Sunday.
The field of 17 teams includes 13 ranked squads: No. 26 LSU, No. 44 Alabama, Augusta State (43), Central Florida (44), Charleston (36), Georgia (13), Louisville (27), North Carolina (34), North Carolina State (41), North Carolina Wilmington (40), South Carolina (29), Vanderbilt (22), Virginia (28) and Wake Forest (10). Unranked teams include Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Not in the field is 2007 winner Duke, which won when Amanda Blumenherst took the individual title with a 54-hole tourney record 9-under par.
LSU has won the event seven times since the tournament began at the Fairwood Country Club in 1982. The Lady Tigers have won three times since the event moved to the U-Club in 2000. Its last win was in 2005.
“This is a very good field and we are looking forward to getting things started,” LSU coach Karen Bahnsen said. “The weather should be great for the entire three days and we are really excited about our chance to play a tournament again on our home course.”
LSU’s lineup includes freshman Megan McChrystal, who shot 5-under in the final two rounds of the Central Florida tournament earlier this week.
Joining McCrystal will be seniors Rebecca Kuhn and Alexis Rather, freshman Amalie Valle and junior Caroline Martens. Four other Lady Tigers — Lindy LaBauve, Nicole Crochet, Kim Meck and Abby Obertheir — will play as individual competitors.
STATESBORO, Ga. — The LSU men’s golf team joins a stellar field when play begins today in the 29th-annual, 54-hole Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational.
