Top QB commits to LSU

LSU football coach Les Miles left no doubt on national signing day that he wanted to sign one, possibly two quarterbacks in the class of 2009.

Miles took a big step in that direction Monday, receiving a commitment from five-star quarterback Russell Shepard of Houston-Cypress Ridge.

“I just found a school where I wanted to be,” Shepard said. “It’s a school I really love.”

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Shepard, the nation’s fourth-rated overall prospect by Rivals.com, selected LSU over a total of 34 other scholarship offers, including finalists Texas, Florida, Michigan and USC.

Shepard, who carries a 3.2 grade point average, is scheduled to graduate in December and enroll at LSU next spring. He is the Tigers seventh early commitment.

“I really didn’t plan on committing today,” Shepard said. “I actually planned on doing it this spring but I woke up this morning, talked to my dad about it. I just felt so comfortable at that school. There are other big time schools with traditions but that’s where I felt most comfortable.”

Shepard accounted for 2,319 yards of total offense and 22 touchdowns in 2007, operating out of a spread system for Cy-Ridge that generated 48 points per game and finished with its first undefeated regular season in 15 years.

Shepard, a two-year starter, has rushed 356 times for 2,861 and 38 TDs during his career and passed for an additional 1,477 yards and 13 scores.

He was named the District 17-5A offensive MVP and earned All-Greater Houston honors as a junior.

“There were certain schools that were going to give me the opportunity to play quarterback and LSU was one,” said Shepard, who runs 4.4 in the 40. “I figured I can go in there and compete.

“I enjoyed seeing the people and the campus,” Shepard said of his recent junior day visit. “I can see myself waking up and being at home for the next four to five years there.”
