THIBODAUX — Riding its longest winning streak since 2001, the Nicholls State baseball team will try for its ninth consecutive win when LSU-Alexandria visits at 6 p.m. today at Ray Didier Field.

A win over LSU-A (6-16), an NAIA independent school, would give Nicholls (8-3) its longest winning streak since a 12-game stretch in 1986.

After being swept in a three-game opening weekend series by Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls has rebounded with wins over Bryant, Tennessee-Martin, Houston Baptist, Arkansas-Monticello (twice) and Southern (three times).

A resurgent Colonel lineup has led the way. Nicholls has hit .341 since beginning the streak Feb. 27. The Colonels have averaged 11.5 hits and 10.4 runs per game in those games.

Redshirt sophomore first baseman Blake Bergeron has an eight-game hitting streak has hit safely in 10 games.

Also, junior shortstop Chase Jaramillo has hit safely in his last six games and recorded five multi-hit games in that stretch.

The Nicholls pitching staff has limited opponents to a .249 batting average.

The Generals have lost 13 of their last 14 games. LSU-A is led by Tid Hilger, who has one home run and 12 RBIs. His .305 batting average is second to James Morgan’s .306 average.

Nicholls opens Southland Conference with a three-game set against Lamar, starting Friday in Thibodaux.

GAME WITH TEXAS SOUTHERN RESCHEDULED: McNeese State’s game with Texas Southern in Houston tonight has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. April 6.

Cowboys coach Terry Burrows said Texas Southern requested the rescheduling.

Next, McNeese (5-5) will host the University of New Orleans (2-5) on Wednesday before opening Southland play this weekend at Northwestern State.
