Prep soccer, wrestling start seasons today
Two more sports seasons begin today with the Dutchtown’s Lady Griffin Soccer Jamboree and the St. Michael Invitational wrestling tournament.
Games begin at 9 a.m. at Dutchtown with 16 teams, including defending state champions St. Scholastica and Vandebilt Catholic, set to compete.
Weigh-ins begin at 7:30 a.m. at St. Michael with action scheduled to start between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Twenty-two teams are entered.
“I think there will be some outstanding play,” Dutchtown coach Anant Vyas said. “We’ve got two defending state champions in St. Scholastica and Vandebilt. And then you also have St. Joseph’s (Academy), Baton Rouge High and us.”
Teams will play a series of 20-minute games on fields at the DHS campus. The St. Michael tourney features a unique format that includes no pre-meet seeding.
“You could go on what people did last year,” St. Michael coach Kris Kienzle said. “But some wrestlers have gotten better since then and you really don’t have anything accurate to go on. So we just go with a blind draw. When I guy weighs in he gets to pick a poker chip to see who he gets matched up against. In the past, we’ve found that it makes for some very good first-round matches.”
Kienzle rates Catholic High, Archbishop Shaw and St. Thomas More as the teams to watch during the one-day tournament.
