SLU draws Florida State in NCAA tournament
HAMMOND — The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team will face Florida State in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday in Tallahassee, Fla., as announced Monday night.
The Lady Lions (13-4-2) face the third-ranked Seminoles (16-4-1), one of the four top national seeds and the ACC tournament runner-up.
Also at the Seminole Soccer Complex, the other first-round match will pit Auburn and California.
“We’re very honored to have the opportunity to represent Southeastern Louisiana University and the Southland Conference against one of the top teams in the country,” SLU coach Blake Hornbuckle said in a news release. “We’re excited to be able to being preparing and training for the challenge.”
SLU clinched its first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament with a 2-0 victory over Texas State in the Southland Conference tournament final Sunday in Natchitoches.
Having outscored their opponents 55-9 this season, SLU is one of two schools in the nation to be ranked in the top five nationally in both scoring offense and defense.
Florida State fell 3-0 to North Carolina in Sunday’s ACC tournament final. FSU has 58 goals and is led by the tandem of Tiffany McCarty (16 goals, six assists) and Jessica Price (12 goals, 10 assists). Erin McNulty (0.87 GAA) has handled the majority of the goalkeeping duties.
