No one could have imagined a wilder finish than the one two years ago, when Parkview Baptist came from behind to win in overtime.
There was no overtime, but there were bizarre happenings, nonetheless, as third-ranked Parkview raced out to a big lead en route to a 44-27 victory over No. 2 Redemptorist on Thursday night at RHS’ Majella Field.
“Some of the things I was afraid of in terms of them making big plays happened,” Redemptorist coach Guy Mistretta said. “It was ugly. I never saw this coming. We lost our composure and got away from what we needed to do too soon.”
The Eagles (8-1, 4-0), who clinched the District 7-3A title, raced out to a 31-7 halftime lead by excelling on offense, defense and special teams.
But as the Wolves (8-1, 3-1) outscored PBS 20-13 in the second half, the game dissolved into a series of unsportsmanlike penalties. There were two player ejections in the first half.
And at one point in the third quarter, the PBS bench thought lineman Luke Thornton had lost a finger, leading to a search of one side of the field. Fortunately, Thornton’s finger was just badly dislocated.
The Wolves’ hopes for a rally also proved to be too little and too late.
“I thought it was going to be an ebb and flow … back and forth,” PBS coach Kenny Guillot said. “Then we found some things that worked on offense and our defense played well.
“I never imagined this. The penalties are something we’ll address. It’s not typical of this series or us.”
Quarterback Brady Wilson rushed for 109 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Eagles, who have won four straight. Wilson also completed 3 of 4 passes for 79 yards and another score for a PBS team that did not have a turnover.
RHS quarterback Deuce Coon rushed for 143 yards on 17 carries with two TDs. Coon was also intercepted three times, completing 10 of 21 for 91 yards. Jeremy Hill added 79 rushing yards on nine carries with a TD for RHS.
Big plays helped propel Parkview to an overwhelming 31-7 halftime lead. The Eagles scored just two plays after the opening kickoff.
Wilson ran the option to the right side and sprinted 50 yards to the end zone, cutting back across the field to the left side of the end zone. Neil Scott’s point-after kick gave Parkview a 7-0 lead 20 seconds into the game.
