Eddie Robinson Career Highlights

1941 — Robinson is hired by the Colored Industrial and Agricultural Institute of Lincoln Parish (later Grambling State) and his first team posts three wins and five losses.

1941 — Robinson earns first win at Grambling, a 37-6 defeat over Tillotson.

1942 — Fielding 33 of the 57 men enrolled in school, the 1942 team holds every opponent scoreless en route to a 9-0-0 record. Grambling becomes only the second collegiate team to shut out each opponent, a feat that has not been accomplished since.

1943-44 — Due to World War II, Grambling fields no football team; Robinson coaches at Grambling High School and wins a state championship.

1949 — Robinson attains win No. 50 with a 14-13 victory over Prairie View.

1949 — Grambling standout Paul “Tank” Younger signs with the Los Angeles Rams in 1949, becoming the first player from a historically black college to sign with an NFL team.

1955 — Grambling squad posts best record in school history (10-0-0).

1957 — Robinson reaches 100-win plateau with a 20-12 defeat of Bethune-Cookman.

1959 — Grambling joins the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

1960 — Grambling wins its first SWAC co-championship.

1963 — Grambling tackle Junius “Buck” Buchanan becomes the first player from a historically black college to be chosen first overall in the NFL draft.

1965 — Robinson scores his 150th win with a 44-7 triumph over Prairie View.

1965 — Grambling wins the SWAC championship to begin what will be a streak of 12 championships or co-championships in 16 years.

1966 — Robinson receives football writer’s citation as “The Coach Who Made the Biggest Contribution to College Football in the Past 25 Years.”

1971 — Robinson collects win No. 200 by defeating Mississippi Valley State 25-15.

1974-75 — Grambling records 16 consecutive wins for longest winning streak in school history.

1976 — Grambling and Morgan State play in the inaugural Pioneer Bowl to become the first U.S. collegiate teams to play in Japan.

1976 — Robinson gains his 250th win with a 28-6 victory over Jackson State.

1976 — Robinson inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.

1979 — Robinson inducted into the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame.

1979 — Robinson inducted into the Pop Warner Hall of Fame.

1982 — Robinson enters the elite 300-victory club with a 43-21 win over Florida A&M.

1983 — New Grambling football stadium named Robinson Stadium.

1983 — Robinson inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

1985 — On Oct. 5, Robinson surpasses “Bear” Bryant’s record with a 27-7 defeat of Prairie View.

1985 — As a result of his achievements, Robinson is featured on the October 14 cover of Sports Illustrated, the only cover devoted to a black college football program in the publication’s history.

1989 — Robinson accomplishes win No. 350 with a 35-30 victory over Alcorn State.

1990 — Robinson coaches his 500th game and defeats Tennessee State 37-20.

1992 — Robinson becomes the first Division I-AA and African-American to receive the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.

1995 — Robinson becomes the first coach to capture his 400th career victory with a 42-6 win over Mississippi Valley State.

1997 — Robinson coaches his final season at Grambling.

1997 — Robinson inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
