St. Jude's tourney starting Saturday
Two local schools, Redemptorist and Dutchtown, are teaming up to host the 2009 Volleyball for St. Jude’s tournament starting on Saturday.
The second annual event came about after Redemptorist coach Jonathan Levesque’s son, Jonathan Chandler, was a cancer patient at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital last year.
The two-day tournament, which concludes Sunday, is one of three key events on the weekend schedule.
“In addition to raising money for St. Jude’s, one of our goals was to make this a premiere tournament teams want to be part of,” Levesque said. “I feel like we’re well on the way to doing just that.”
Two other events are also set for Saturday. Silliman Institute of Clinton plays in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools South State Softball Tournament that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in Liberty, Miss.
Defending state champion University High and traditional powers St. Joseph’s Academy and Catholic High are among 16 schools scheduled to compete in a Capital City Swim League meet that will begin at 9:10 a.m. Saturday at the Crawfish Aquatics pool.
VOLLEYBALL FOR ST. JUDE’S: Northlake Christian of Covington, last year’s Division V-Classes 1A and below state champion, helps lead the 12-team field. The championship is set for 3 p.m. Sunday.
“It’s hard for me to pick a favorite,” Levesque said. “I’ve heard John Curtis is very good and that Chalmette is another team that is really strong.
“And I don’t think you can count out Newman and a couple of our local teams, Episcopal and Dunham. I think it’s going to be very competitive.”
Dutchtown is not entered, but will serve as the tourney host. Co-host Redemptorist and Tara are other local teams competing.
The tournament raised $6,500 last year and this year’s goal is $10,000. Levesque’s son is currently in remission and will be part of the event.
MAIS SOUTH STATE: Silliman (17-13-1) has won five straight and will play tourney host Amite School Center at 9 a.m. Saturday to help open the action.
The Wildcats beat Wilkinson County Christian 2-1 in extra innings in the final game of the season to advance.
Kayla Davidson was the winning pitcher. Kaitlyn Weaver and Haley Harrington each had two hits in the win. Silliman has split its games with ASC.
“They’ve got a good pitcher, and we’ve got a good pitcher,” Silliman coach Trae Weaver said. “It’s been one-run games with a lot of defense.”
The two top teams in the six-team tournament advance to the MAIS Class 2A Overall State Tournament on Oct. 3.
CCSL MEET: University, the defending Division IV-Class 2A champion for boys and girls, and Catholic High, last year’s Division I-5A boys runner-up, will compete in their first Capital City Swim League meets of the year Saturday.
Other top teams entered include Lutcher, last year’s Division III-3A boys state champion, St. Joseph’s, the Division I-5A girls runner-up, and Parkview Baptist, the Division III-3A boys and girls runner-up a year ago.
