Christian Life names Maggio basketball coach

Christian Life Academy wasted little time when hiring a new head boys basketball coach, selecting Plainview High’s Carlo Maggio to replace Todd Foster.

Foster accepted the job as Baton Rouge Community College’s first men’s basketball coach last week and the Crusaders had his successor in place not long after that.

Maggio, who spent the last two years at Plainview, was selected by a search committee that included Foster and CLA’s new athletic director, Kerry Wilkerson.

The hiring of Maggio completes a revamping of the Crusader staff that began with the hiring of Wilkerson, who previously coached at Hosanna Christian Academy in 2000-01.

Other changes include the hiring of former Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball player Megan Sutherland as head volleyball coach and North DeSoto’s Jonathan Causey as head baseball coach. Causey was an assistant at Parkview Baptist for three years.

Another local school, Scotlandville, has added a  former Lee High coach to its staff. Donald Clark, who had a stint as head football coach at Lee, is now on the Hornets’ coaching staff.

Duo in Friendship Games

Wesley Perkins of Dutchtown High and Tyler Lane of Parkview Baptist will play for the USA Athletes International Baseball Team that will compete in the Friendship Games for Seven Days.

Games will be played in Venezuela and the island of Curacao. Perkins, a catcher, is a Millsaps College signee. Lane, also a catcher, has signed with LSU-Shreveport.

Ex-GOHS standout signs

Former Glen Oaks High basketball standout Troy Cage has signed with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The 6-foot-5 Cage was part of the 2005 GOHS team that won the Class 4A state title and signed with UNLV the next year. He played just one year for the Rebels and transferred to Texas-based Kilgore Junior College.

Cage averaged 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game at Kilgore last year. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at UTC.

Fall baseball league
Episcopal High baseball coach Chris Counts is in the process of organizing the Louisiana Scout League, a wood-bat fall baseball league of four teams that would allow players to compete at college facilities around the state during a six-week season.

Games would be played on Sundays at Southern, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of New Orleans, McNeese, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Baton Rouge Community College.

Teams would have 12-15 players on a roster. There would be guaranteed at-bats and innings pitched.

Scouting packets will be made up for each player and will be presented to college coaches each week.
