SU's Stewart gets second-team All-American nod
Southern senior wide receiver Juamorris Stewart has been named to The Sports Network's preseason FCS All-America second team.
Stewart, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior from Istrouma-Baton Rouge, recorded 76 catches for 1,138 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2008. He led the Southwestern Athletic Cconference in receptions per game (6.9) and in receiving yards per game (103.5).
Stewart also had five games of 100-plus receiving yards and five games with two touchdown receptions. He was named a unanimous first team All-SWAC selection and was a first-team Sheridan Broadcasting All-America pick.
DAVIS TO PLAY IN NBA SUMMER LEAGUE: Southern's Chris Davis will make his professional basketball debut on July 14th, when the Baton Rouge native takes the court for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Davis, was named to the Louisiana Sportswriters Association second team in 2008-09 and was a third-team All-SWAC selection. He averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.23 steals per game in 2008-09.
The Chicago summer league entry will play a total of five games from July 14-19 at Cox Pavilion and the Thomas & Mack Center located on the campus of UNLV. Bulls first-round picks James Johnson and Taj Gibson highlight the roster, and will be joined by Anthony Roberson, Linton Johnson III and DeMarcus Nelson.
WAHL WINS SUMMER LEAGUE HONOR: Southern reliever Kyle Wahl was named pitcher of the week for Leesburg Lightning of the Florida Collegiate Summer League for the second week in a row.
Leesburg manager Frank Viola bestowed the team honor on Wahl, who struck out 11 batters in six innings on Thursday.
Wahl, a 6-foot-3, 180-pounder who just finished his sophomore season, was 2-3 with a 3.72 earned run average this season for Southern. Wahl struck out 32 batters in 38 2/3 inning pitched and led the Jaguars with three saves.
