Ex-SLU RB Lucas signs with CFL team

HAMMOND — Former Southeastern Louisiana running back Jay Lucas signed a free agent contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League earlier this week and is currently participating in training camp with the team.

As a sophomore, Lucas, a Baton Rouge native who played at Redemptorist, produced just under 1,000 total yards and seven touchdowns. As a junior, he was a first team All-Southland Conference selection, rushing for 1,270 yards, adding 485 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.

As a senior, he rushed for 787 yards and caught a career-high 58 passes for 557 yards, scoring eight touchdowns.

Lucas finished with 2,741 rushing yards, 22 rushing touchdowns, 146 receptions, 1,279 receiving yards, 30 total touchdowns and a 5.8 yard per carry average.
