Something about Michigan always attracted Drew Dileo to its football teams. He figures it was the helmets.

Now, he plans to wear one.

Following an in-school visit by Michigan assistant coach Fred Jackson earlier this week, Dileo on Thursday accepted a scholarship offer from the Wolverines.

“Growing up here,” the Parkview Baptist junior said, “everybody’s a big LSU fan all their life. But Michigan was my secondary team among me and some of my friends in the neighborhood.”

A Class of 2010 commitment who projects as an academic qualifier, Dileo committed to Michigan with offers from Stanford, Tulane and Rice.

Michigan was the first of those schools to offer. The Wolverines project Dileo as a slot receiver.

“I knew I was going to be a prospect,” the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder said. “I just wasn’t sure what level.”

He started to get a good idea in the final game of his sophomore season.

Dileo was voted Parkview’s outstanding player after the Eagles beat Westlake in the Class 3A final that year.

Dileo, a Greenwell Springs resident who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, plays wide receiver and cornerback for Parkview. But he is best known for his abilities in the return game.

After returning four kicks for touchdowns as a junior, Dileo garnered All-Metro and all-state honors in that department. His speed and vision make him a natural there.

“Any way we can get him in open space,” Parkview coach Kenny Guillot said, “we’re going to do it. He has great vision and is great at making people miss.”

Dileo said he got some interest from LSU, the hometown team.
