SU stays winless
Jaguars fall to South Carolina Upstate, 71-43
LAS VEGAS — Southern and South Carolina Upstate met Monday afternoon in a matchup of two winless teams.
Upstate is no longer winless — Southern is. In fact, after the Spartans raced out to an early lead and cruised to a 71-43 victory, the best news for the Jaguars is that they didn’t have much time to dwell on a blowout loss to a program in its second year of Division I men’s basketball.
SU’s 0-11 start is the worst in the school’s Division I history.
Southern finishes nonconference play at 10:30 a.m. today against Northern Colorado (3-8) in the final day of the Las Vegas Classic.
On Monday, guard Bobby Davis led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds as South Carolina Upstate (1-9) made quick work of the Jaguars. After the first 12 minutes, the Spartans held a 24-8 lead.
Josh Chavis added 12 points for USCU, which shot 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.
“I was proud of our focus and the way we approached the game,” Spartans coach Eddie Payne said. “The best thing about it was that we played each possession with focus and intensity. It didn’t matter what the score was, and we played like that for 40 minutes. ... Bobby had a monster performance.”
No player scored more than seven points for Southern, which lost despite committing a season-low nine turnovers (the Jaguars averaged 19.7 turnovers heading into Monday’s game).
SU’s main problem was cold shooting. The Jaguars were 29 percent from the field and made just 2 of 24 shots from behind the 3-point arc. Their 5-for-14 effort from the free-throw line was not much better.
After USCU took its 24-8 lead with 7:41 to play in the first half, Southern scored five straight points to cut the lead to 11 points, 24-13. That’s when Chavis took over, hitting three of his four first-half 3-pointers to give the Spartans a 36-21 lead at halftime.
“We know that everyone knows that we like to play inside-out. Bobby and Nick are our go-to guys. Once they get it going, teams like to double down on them. That leaves shots open for the guards. I just took my time and knocked them down,” Chavis said.
Southern never came closer than 14 in the second half.
The Jaguars return home Wednesday after their game against Northern Colorado. SU opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play Jan. 3 against Texas Southern.
