LSU men’s basketball coach Trent Johnson announced Thursday that sophomore forward Garrett Green would be redshirted for the 2008-09 season.

Green, from Woodland Hills, Calif., has missed all but a couple of days of team practice since formal sessions began in mid-October with lower back problems and a return date to full practice status is unable to be determined at this time.

According to LSU basketball trainer Shawn Eddy, Green was having “continued discomfort” in his lower back and was “unable to sustain the day-to-day team regiment” through practice.

Coach Johnson has said several times in media sessions about Green that he was concerned about the sophomore because of past experiences.

“I have my concerns about his back injury,” said Coach Johnson. “Garrett just hasn’t gotten better. We are going to miss him this season. He works extremely hard and I was as impressed with him as anyone during our preseason individual drills. He will continue to rehabilitate and we will get him ready for next season when he will be a big help for us inside.”

Green played 25 games with one start during the 2007-08 freshman season, averaging 1.8 points and 1.6 rebounds a game, while playing 9.6 minutes per game.

Freshman forward Dennis Harris is also expected to redshirt this season.
