Glen Oaks High is in search of a new head football coach who would be the school’s third since 2006.

Vernon Langley was removed as head coach of the Panthers last week after two seasons. GOHS was 6-12 under Langley, who was hired weeks before the 2007 season began.

A former GOHS player and a 1991 graduate of the school, Langley replaced Herman Brister Jr., who spent one season at the school before moving into an administrative position at another school.

The Panthers have not advanced to the playoffs since 2004.

The 35-year-old Langley has been a teacher-coach at the school for 10 years and also coached two seasons at Redemptorist.

“I think we need more growth in terms of both athletics and academics,” GOHS Principal Wilbert August Jr. said. “It’s not like old Glen Oaks football and we need to move back toward that.

“I didn’t see enough discipline on the field and that should be in place whenever you step on the field to represent Glen Oaks.”

August said he has formed a search committee to help hire the next GOHS coach.

August said those interested should send résumés and a letter of application to the school’s dean of students.

Langley said he is weighing other professional options and wants to coach again.

“I asked him (August) to work with me on some things and we couldn’t agree,” Langley, a science teacher at the school, said. “He (August) has asked me to stay on as a teacher.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I’ve always worked with the total student in the classroom and as an athlete.

“I felt we were doing good things. We had 38 freshmen and the first ninth-grade football team since 2001. We also have 20 freshmen out for track. But I guess it wasn’t enough.”
