Zachary High’s Ben Hernandez has committed to play baseball at Florida’s Okaloosa-Walton Community College.

A pitcher-shortstop, Hernandez has helped the Broncos win back-to-back Class 4A titles. He also is Zachary’s starting quarterback in football.

“I went there for a visit and a workout over the summer,” Hernandez said. “The workout went really good and I liked the school. They were the first school to make me a offer and I decided to go with it.”

Hernandez made All-Metro and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s all-state teams last season. He hit .414 with 12 doubles, 29 runs batted in and 33 stolen bases.

As a pitcher, Hernandez was 9-2 with 98 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched.

At Niceville-based Okaloosa, Hernandez said he will primarily play in the middle infield. Other schools expressing interest in Hernandez included Meridian (Miss.) Community College, Pensacola (Fla.) Community College, Gulf Coast (Miss.) Community College, the University of South Alabama and Southeastern Louisiana University.
