The bowling notebook has to start out with some sad news this week as one of our local bowling’s favorite families suffered a loss this week.
Glynn Snee, 62 of Bedford, Texas, the eldest of John and Mary Snee of Baton Rouge, lost his battle with cancer late Thursday night and certainly our condolences go to the entire Snee family. All of them for many years have been a part of bowling history in Baton Rouge dating to the days when John and Mary moved to the area to bring Circle Bowl to life.
The Snee name has continued to live through the great bowling and work done by one of the sports ambassadors, another son, Greg, and the Snee name continues in this column and our honor roll into another generation with Greg’s son Gregory and daughter Caroline.
Glynn was a bowler who certainly made a name for himself as well, winning the city championship back in the early 1980s both here and in New Orleans. He also had several good performances in such events as Southern and the senior all-star tour. Thursday night, Greg returned from Dallas just hours before Glynn passed away and came to Circle while the Industrial League was bowling I think more than anything to be with many of his best friends.
He told the story of how Glynn won the city championship with a score of 1903 and the next year Greg added the Snee name again to the city title with — amazingly — the same score.
Glynn also has his name on the list of winners in the old Baskin-Robbins, now BR singles, in March 1997 at Metro Bowl, winning $3,700. His entering average at the time was 220 and he averaged 232 to win. That’s impressive.
Glynn was known well in the Dallas-Fort Worth bowling circle as well and certainly the responses this weekend on allbowling.com to his passing shows the love of everyone in that area and here in south Louisiana to the Snee family. Again, we offer condolences, and while I did not know Glynn as well as I did the rest of the family, everyone I’ve talked to has had nothing but great memories to pass along and that’s the best tribute of all.
For the 10th time the “Golden Oldies” Grandparents and 50 and over tournament is set to get under way this weekend at Don Carter’s. This will be the first of two weekends of play with doubles and singles on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and team event on Sundays at 1 p.m. Entries are available at Don Carter’s and also at batonrougebowling.com.
The 50th anniversary season of the Professional Bowlers Tour begins Sunday with a unique event, the Chris Paul NBA-PBA Doubles, an event that was taped a couple of weeks ago but is just interesting enough in format to make people check it out.
With Paul’s connection to the New Orleans Hornets, it certainly gives a local angle to the show.
The Invitational also marks the first time professional athletes from other sports will partner with professional bowlers for a bowling event with a dedicated telecast.
