As another major storm, Hurricane Ike, moves toward the Gulf of Mexico, local and area schools made their football moves for the week.

Eight schools moved their games up to either Wednesday or Thursday. Some sought and found new opponents in the wake of game cancellations.

St. Amant travels to Lutcher for a 6 p.m. game that will open the Week 2 schedule on Wednesday. The game will be the season opener for both teams. Both teams had Week 1 games canceled following Hurricane Gustav.

Walker at Ponchatoula, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, is also a season opener.

Meanwhile, five schools have moved their games up to Thursday. Four of those games will be played locally — Zachary at Central, Springfield at Live Oak, Calvary Baptist vs. Southern Lab at Southern University’s A.W. Mumford Stadium and Archbishop Hannan at Catholic-Pointe Coupee. Also, Pearl River will play at Pope John Paul at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Three of the four games were originally scheduled and were moved up one day. Catholic-PC picked up Hannan after both schools lost their Week 2 games with Iberville Parish teams.

CHSPC was supposed to play North Iberville, while Hannan was set to play East Iberville. Those two schools, along with White Castle and Plaquemine, had their games canceled by the Iberville Parish School System.

Also set for Thursday is Catholic High at St. Thomas More in Lafayette.

“I went to scout their (STM’s) game on Saturday and coach (Jim) Hightower talked about the possibility of moving it then,” Catholic coach Dale Weiner said. “We agreed on it today.”

Capitol Academy, which lost its game with Woodlawn when the East Baton Rouge Parish school system canceled six games last week, is negotiating to play traditional power John Curtis in New Orleans on Thursday. Curtis’ scheduled game with East St. John was canceled.

“We’re negotiating to play Curtis,” Capitol Athletic Director Alvin Stewart said. “There are still some things we need to look at. We hope to have it all resolved (Tuesday).”

The list of games still scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday includes: East Ascension at Denham Springs, Livonia at False River Academy, North Vermilion at Jackson, St. Michael at Parkview Baptist and Brusly at St. John-Plaquemine.

Baker, which lost its game with Tara in the EBR cancellations, will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Hahnville, which was originally scheduled to play Istrouma.
