BEIJING — Four Louisiana athletes with local ties look to have their own Olympic gold rush this morning.

Baton Rouge’s Danielle Scott-Arruda, a former Woodlawn High star, and ex-Assumption standout Kim Willoughby, a Napoleonville native, are set to help lead the U.S. women’s indoor volleyball team in its gold medal match against Brazil, starting at 7 a.m. CDT.

Meanwhile, former LSU stars Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles are part of the U.S. women’s basketball team that meets Australia in a gold medal game set for 9 a.m. (NBC).

It is the first Olympic final appearance in 24 years for the fourth-ranked U.S. women’s volleyball team. The U.S. team now faces No. 1 Brazil after ousting No. 2 Italy in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Cuba in the semifinals. The U.S. has not won a medal since taking bronze in 1992.

Scott-Arruda is a four-time Olympian, while Willoughby, former Capitol High star Augustus and Fowles are all first-time Olympians.

The U.S. women’s basketball can wrap up its fourth straight gold medal with a victory over Australia, the team that won the World Championships in 2006.

With its semifinal win over Russia, the unbeaten U.S. team avenged its 2006 worlds loss to Russia.

Today’s game with Australia is a rematch of the FIBA Diamond Ball Tournament final held before the Olympics. The U.S. won that game, 71-67.
