The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns came out to practice on Wednesday afternoon, but were quickly forced inside because of wet and rainy conditions. The team worked 10 periods in shorts and shoulder pads.
“We had a good day overall,” defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier said. “They played hard from the beginning of practice all the way until the end.”
With the team adding shoulder pads for the first time this fall, the practice slate included a few competitive and physical sessions.
The Cajuns will practice at 3:30 p.m. today in shorts and shoulder pads and at 3:30 p.m. Friday in full pads. Saturday’s scrimmage at Cajuns Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
Southeastern Louisiana
DEFENSE STANDS OUT AS LIONS WORK IN PADS FOR FIRST TIME: In Hammond, the Southeastern Louisiana University football team put on shoulder pads for the first time during fall practice as the Lions worked out Wednesday morning on the Southeastern Practice Fields.
The Lions’ defensive unit, led by linemen Steven Honore, Walter Vaughn and Ryan Anderson, set the tone during team drills with a steady pass rush that led to an interception by Tommy Connors and several batted passes.
“We’re much more athletic in the defensive line and Steven is just having a tremendous camp,” coach Mike Lucas said. “I’ve seen a lot of defensive ends in the time that I’ve been coaching in the Southland Conference and he has the chance to be a dominating factor. He really has what it takes to get off the ball and he’s strong and powerful.”
“Getting Walt back has been great for our defense, he’s done really well,” Lucas said. “Ryan had a great offseason, his strength levels are up and he’s battling for a starting spot and (freshman) Brian Rodgers and (freshman) Devan Walker have each done well for us.”
COWBOYS GO IN FULL PADS: McNeese State enior wide receiver Quinten Lawrence out-ran the defender, grabbed a long toss from quarterback Derrick Fourroux and didn’t stop until he crossed the goal line 75 yards away.
That came on the third pass play of team drills during the Cowboys’ Wednesday morning practice.
It was the first time in full pads for the Cowboys and action took place on the new artificial turf at Cowboy Stadium.
