HAMMOND — The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field coaching staff has signed 20 athletes, 10 men and 10 women, making it one of the largest and what the staff hopes will be one of the most talented recruiting classes in the program’s history.

“We addressed some needs this year and signed a large class,” coach Sean Brady said in a university news release. “This class will add the needed depth to our teams. Several of these freshman women will make immediate impact on our team.

“This men’s class is solid and will take some time to develop. However, there are some athletes that we believe can help us immediately,” added Brady, whose men’s team finished second in the recent Southland Conference championships.

The women’s signees include distant runners Velma George from Jackson High School and Katherine Cade from Mandeville, sprinters Alexandria Arlington of Karr of New Orleans and Ericka Peyton of Dutchtown and multi-event athlete Kristen Eubanks of Oak Gorve.

Field event signees are Christian Bowers, a javelin thrower who is transferring from Louisiana-Monroe; Renada Living, a state champion in the outdoor discus and indoor shot put at Lafayette; Amber Thomas, an outdoor shot put state champion and a third-place finisher in the indoor shot put at New Iberia; Lacey Sanchez, who finished second in the state in the outdoor pole vault and third in the indoor event at St. Michael; and Michelle Ogashi, who finished second in the state in the triple jump at New Iberia.

The men’s signees include six sprinters: Brandon Camp and Anthony Duckett of Lamar Consolidated in Rosenburg, Texas; Donald Cousins of Slidell; Paul Madere, a state champion in the 110-meter outdoor hurdles and 55-meter indoor hurdles at Dutchtown; Denzell Bell from O.P. Walker in New Orleans; and Rocky Caruth, a native of Trinidad and Tobago who helped Central Arizona Community College to a junior college national championship.

Field event signees are Kovey Simmons, a state champion in the indoor and outdoor pole vault with a best 15 feet, 6 inches; Casey Revere, a javelin thrower from Mandeville; and thrower Adonson Shallow from Central Arizona. Corey Santangelo, a multi-event athlete from Central Private, is expected to compete in the decathlon.
