HOUSTON — The road jinx is over for the Baton Rouge Capitals.

Winless away from home since the club’s inception in 2007, the Capitals overcame a slew of missed scoring chances to still come away with a convincing 3-1 victory over the Houston Leones.

The Capitals improved to 5-7-1 with the win.

Leo Barros scored the first goal for the Capitals in the game’s 25th minute on a pass from Ricardo Santos. Nine minutes later, Lea Barro and Diego Michelato executed a quick string of give and goes that resulted in a goal by Michelato for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Houston closed the deficit to 2-1 with a second-half penalty kick, but the Leones could come no closer. The Capitals closed the scoring by benefit of an own goal by the Houston goalkeeper.

The Capitals return home to Olympia Stadium on Wednesday to take on the Monterey Rayados, a Division II professional team from Mexico in a scrimmage match.

The match is set for 7 p.m., setting up a showdown with the Austin Aztex, the leader in the Premier Developmental League’s Mid-South division, on June 12.
