Capitals drop two in Laredo, fall to third
Baton Rouge (4-5, 12 points) managed only one goal in two matches against Laredo (5-1-3, 18 points) — losing 3-1 Friday and 3-0 Saturday — to end the Capitals three-match win streak.
Austin (7-1-1, 22 points) leads the league, followed by Laredo. Baton Rouge finds itself deadlocked with El Paso (3-4-3, 12 points) and New Orleans (3-3-3, 12 points) for third place.
Slidell native Gino Ray produced Baton Rouge’s lone goal of the weekend that pulled his team even at 1-1.
Laredo registered three goals for the fourth straight match, three of which were wins, in Saturday’s rematch.
Daniel Galvan scored for the first time this season two minutes into the match, sending in a liner past Baton Rouge goalie Dustyn Brim.
Striker Felix Garcia scored in his fourth straight match, increasing Laredo’s lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute to the lower right of the net.
Theo Brown then gathered Garcia’s corner kick and headed in his first goal at the 85th minute.
Baton Rouge, which was down a man because of a red card at the 35th minute and also had a pair of yellow cards, had two second-half scoring opportunities go awry, including a 38-yard blast that hit the crossbar.
Baton Rouge returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday with a home match against Dallas-Ft. Worth at Olympia Stadium.
