Redemptorist student earns spot in rodeo

Hunter Davis, a resident of Central and an eighth-grade student at Redemptorist High School, has earned a position on the Louisiana Wrangler Junior High rodeo team, which will be traveling to Gallup, New Mexico for the 4th Annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo on June 29.

Davis, along with his partner, J.D. Hebert of Egan, qualified for the WJHFR in team roping after competing all year in rodeos throughout Louisiana. Each participating state takes the top four contestants or teams in their respective events to the national rodeo in Gallup. 

The events consist of barrel racing, tie down calf roping, boys breakaway roping, girls breakaway roping, chute dogging, ribbon roping, team roping, girls goat tying, boys goat tying, pole bending and bull riding.    

Purvis wins local golf championship

Gracie Purvis won the Briarwood Ladies Golf Associated championships Wednesday.

Laurie Darouse and Michelle Remington-Remo followed Purvis in the first flight.

Dee Dee Becnel won the second flight, followed by Suzie Davis and Rebe Wheeler.

Jeanie Gauthier won the third flight, followed by Yvonne Blanchard and Patsy Toma.

Gaynelle McNeil was closest to the pin, while Blanchard had the most accurate drive.

Baton Rouge Community College will hold softball tryouts on Tuesday, June 3 at 1 p.m., at Alaska Field, located on the corner of Alaska Street and Roosevelt Street, about 200 yards from the LSU Softball Complex on the LSU Campus.

All current and future BRCC student athletes are encouraged to tryout. Scholarships are available.
