Owners of the nation’s longest winning streak at 13 games, the LSU Tigers need two more victories to clinch the Southeastern Conference Western Division championship.

A sweep at Auburn would strengthen an increasingly more attractive case for LSU having one final regional tournament at Alex Box Stadium.

“It’s obviously a big weekend for us,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said.

The series is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. today at Auburn, Ala., weather permitting.

Some forecasts Wednesday called for an 80 percent chance of rain today at Auburn, including a 70 percent chance in the afternoon right up until game time.

More rain is predicted for Friday.

LSU (36-16-1) leads the SEC West at 15-11-1 and controls its destiny in the race for the divisional championship.

Auburn (28-25, 11-16) is next-to-last in the West and is tied with Tennessee for next-to-last in the 12-team conference.

“We just focus on ourselves,” Auburn coach Tom Slater said. “We can’t worry about what’s going on with other people. We just try to go out and focus on the game at hand, and that’s what we’ll do again this weekend — and do our best to win each and every game and to give ourselves a chance.”

LSU is coming off a 7-6 victory in 15 innings over UNO in a game that ended at 12:22 a.m. Wednesday at Zephyr Field in Metairie. Mainieri’s team showered and bused to Opelika, Ala., arriving at their hotel at 7 a.m.

Mainieri canceled an afternoon weight workout to let his players get plenty of rest before a 7:30 p.m. practice.

He said he wouldn’t have a good idea about the toll the UNO game took on the players and the pitching staff until after practice and this morning. Mainieri took several players out of the game because their bodies were breaking down from fatigue, he said.

“We obviously extended some pitchers more than we wanted to, so I’m sure it’s going to affect us,” Mainieri said.

They need to concentrate on winning the series more than worrying about a sweep.
