CPS, Marshall set to resume series
Central Private has flirted with disaster by falling behind in most of its Mississippi Private School Association playoff games.
First-year CPS coach Jason Kinchen is challenging his team buck that trend, starting today.
The Rebels (31-2) host Marshall Academy (22-7) in the second game of the MPSA’s best-of-three-games series to decide its overall Class 2A champion. Game time is 6 p.m. at Central Private. Should the game be rained out, it would be played at 6 p.m. Friday at CPS. A third game, if needed, would be played Saturday at Marshall.
“We’ve been behind at the start of most of our games lately,” Kinchen said. “It seems like it takes us one at-bat through the order and then we start hitting the ball better.
“This is the time to be offensive-minded from the first inning. We need to try and take control in the first inning.”
The MPSA 2A South champion Rebels scored seven runs in the final four innings to notch in a 10-8 win over MPSA North champion Marshall on Tuesday night in Holly Springs, Miss.
Jeff Martrain had a grand slam home run to help power the Central Private offense in game one as the Rebels handed Marshall ace Chris Gardner (11-1) his first loss of the season. Jacob Fryoux also had a home run for CPS.
Kinchen expects Gardner, who was lifted early in game one, to again be the starter. The Rebels will counter with unbeaten Gage Wilkinson (7-0), who hasn’t pitched since the first game of last week’s 2A South series against Copiah Academy.
The play of catcher Brennan Courville could be another key for Central Private, according to Kinchen.
“Marshall is a good fastball hitting team,” Kinchen said. “They can get on base and run. Courville has done a good job keeping other teams from stealing bases and our pitchers help in that process, too.
“Hitting the ball and getting the lead early helps, too. It puts more pressure on the other team.”
