Southern divides twin bill with LSUE
Calvin Anderson went 4-for-4, while Victor Franklin had two hits and three RBIs to power Southern to an 11-7 win over LSU-Eunice in the first game of an exhibition doubleheader at Lee-Hines Field on Thursday.
Delta Cleary and Matt Creel each had two hits and an RBI for LSU-Eunice, which won the second game 4-3.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the first game, Southern (26-16) got hits by its first five batters in the bottom of the first inning and took a 6-1 lead into the fourth inning.
Chris Donaby got the win, pitching 41/3 innings, allowing six hits and five runs (two earned). Marcus Moore pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.
Michael Thomas had two hits and three RBIs, James Armstrong went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Michael Gavion also had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
LSUE was led by Boomer Blanchard, who had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
In the second game, Jesse Olivar was the only Southern batter with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored.
LSUE pitchers Cory Lopez and Alex McCollum combined for five innings of two-run ball. Lopez was credited with the win.
LSUE’s Kellen Bozeman had a home run in each game.
Jordan Talbot started for Southern and gave up six hits and four runs in 51/3, while striking out six.
Mitchell Henderson followed with 11/3 of scoreless relief.
